Music
Music is a big part of life at St Giles’ & St George’s. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to discover their musical voice, develop their talents and experience the joy of making music with others.
From singing together in school, to learning instruments, performing on stage and sharing music with our local community, we provide a wide range of opportunities for children to listen, create, perform and develop as musicians.
Our music curriculum develops musical knowledge and skills through singing, playing, composing, improvising, listening and performing, while our wider musical opportunities allow children to take their learning beyond the classroom.
Rocksteady – Making Music Together
Our Rocksteady sessions give children the opportunity to learn contemporary instruments as part of a band, including electric guitar, bass, keyboards, drums and vocals.
Working together as a band encourages children to listen to one another, develop their musicianship and experience the excitement of creating music as a team. It is also a wonderful opportunity for children to build confidence, resilience and a sense of belonging as they develop their skills and perform together to a live audience.
Rocksteady's approach is based around inclusive, practical band lessons where children learn and perform alongside their peers.
Instrumental Opportunities
We work with Entrust Music Service Staffordshire to provide small-group woodwind tuition, giving children the opportunity to develop their skills on an instrument and experience what it is like to be a musician. This also leads to wider orchestral opportunities across the county.
Through instrumental learning, children develop musical skills alongside qualities such as concentration, perseverance, listening and self-discipline. Entrust Music provides instrumental and vocal tuition, whole-class ensemble teaching and other specialist music provision across Staffordshire.
Singing Squad
Our Singing Squad is made up of KS2 children who share a love of singing and enjoy performing together.
Being part of Singing Squad gives children the opportunity to develop their vocal skills, learn how to perform as an ensemble and experience the excitement of singing to a live audience while creating musical memories.
Throughout the year, our singers have opportunities to perform in a variety of exciting venues and events, including:
🎶 Young Voices – performing alongside thousands of other children in a spectacular arena concert.
🎄 Festival of Christmas Music at Victoria Hall – joining other schools and musicians to celebrate the joy of Christmas through music.
🎵 School and community performances – sharing our singing with audiences within and beyond our school.
Music and Our Community
We believe that music is a powerful way to connect with others.
Our KS1 children enjoy developing links with our local community through performances at care homes and the local hospital. These opportunities allow children to experience the joy that music can bring to others while developing their confidence as performers.
Music becomes a way for our children to connect, communicate, celebrate and contribute to our community.
A School That Celebrates Music
Music is woven throughout school life. Alongside our curriculum and instrumental opportunities, children experience performances, concerts, singing opportunities and musical events throughout the year. Our school calendar includes events such as Young Voices, Stoke’s Gotta Sing, Rocksteady performances, Entrust concerts, whole school music showcase and wider music celebrations.
We are proud to be a school where children are encouraged to find their voice, share their talents and discover the joy of making music together.
Listen. Create. Perform. Belong.
